The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will identify, develop and promote relationship strategies for major gift prospects in an assigned portfolio. As a direct report to the Assistant Vice President of Development, the CDO will work independently and collaborate with institutional partners to secure gifts to further the goals of the college, with an emphasis on major gifts from alumni of the college. The CDO will oversee the activities and professional development of the Assistant Director of Leadership Gifts for the college.

Led by Dean Carla Koretsky, the College of Arts and Sciences represents the academic heart and liberal arts core of Western Michigan University and provides a broad range of academic programs. From day one, students are provided with a strong and rigorous foundation preparing them for a range of careers in the humanities, social sciences and STEM fields where they thrive personally and professionally. Students are high achievers and have been recipients of the very competitive and distinguished Goldwater Fellowships and Fulbright awards. The College is also home to a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, the country’s oldest and most respected honor society for the liberal arts and sciences.

Major Duties

Identify, develop and promote relationship strategies for major gift prospects in assigned portfolio.
Establish and build relationships with donors, coordinating strategies and personal visits that include institutional partners.
Write major gift proposals and agreements.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required Experience

  • Five years’ relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, sales, marketing, advertising, public relations, communications or related field.
  • Willingness to travel on a frequent basis.
  • Capable of motivating volunteers and donors.
  • Strong self-motivation.
