Overview

Emory University seeks an experienced and entrepreneurial trailblazer to provide leadership and strategic direction for fundraising, alumni and constituent engagement efforts for this top federally funded department whose vision is to become an innovative global leader in discovery, training and clinical care.

 

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Advancement, the successful candidate will have at least ten years of progressive experience in higher education, advancement, fundraising or healthcare.  The candidate will also be a skilled professional with the ability to manage senior staff who perform at the highest levels of sustained success in managing individual, leadership, and major gift activity to identify key initiatives for private funding.

Emory University is a private research university in Atlanta, Georgia founded in 1836. It is the second-oldest private institution of higher education in Georgia. The Emory’s medical school, departments, and programs are consistently ranked among the best in the nation, according to the 2023 edition of US News and World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools” guide.  Of the five academic health programs, the physician assistant program has been ranked fifth in the nation, the physical therapy program has been ranked eighth and Emory has the first genetic counseling training program in the state of Georgia.  As a comprehensive research university, Emory’s academic programs span a great range from arts and sciences to business, law, theology and the health professions. These different fields of study are knit together by robust interdisciplinary programs and a core devotion to liberal learning.

 

Essential Job Functions (partial list)
Fundraising:

§  Effectively communicate the university’s mission, vision and the university’s strategic plan, as well as other relevant information regarding the university goals and operations.

§  Manage a dynamic portfolio of high-net worth individuals for principal and major gifts prospects.

§  Work with volunteer leadership groups related to major gift activity.

§  Directs the planning for major gift functions, donor recognition and major gift stewardship.

§  Ensure dynamic processes in all phases of donor qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

Collaborate with other departments to create strategies for developing donor relations/stewardship standards across campus for the purpose of creating an energetic and enthusiastic culture of philanthropy.
 

Administrative:

Help further develop and orchestrate the implementation of the division’s strategic plan to advance institutional advancement efforts.
Assume responsibility for the day-to-day management of the alumni relations, development, and fundraising staff, working with them to design, implement and direct an integrated and comprehensive development program, with special emphasis on identifying, cultivating, soliciting, engaging and stewarding support to provide long-term financial sustainability.
Manage and oversee all budgetary responsibilities for the area and assigned departments.
Assess, build, manage and lead a high-performing team of development professionals.
 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Successful candidates will possess experience as lead solicitor, closing gifts of ($100K+ and $1M) from prospects, working in comprehensive campaigns. Prior experience in clinical/grateful patient fundraising with a preference for experience at an Academic Medical Center. An interest or aptitude for science, medicine and scientific discovery.

§  Experience managing budgets and financial reports, working with various technologies including advanced knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, mass email applications, database and project management software and CRM systems.

§  Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving skills with attention to detail, the ability to work with ambiguity, navigate a complex work environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

§  Experience leading teams and departments, working independently as well as collaboratively to achieve goals, with a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service.

§  Master’s level degree.

§  Superb written, verbal, and research skills as well as effective presentation skills.

§  Possess a high level of professionalism and commitment to confidentiality with sound judgment and discretion.

§  Capacity to lead and develop a team’s skills through effective feedback and coaching, motivating and empowering colleagues while being institutionally minded, strategic and impactful.

§  Flexibility to accommodate changing priorities and deadlines.
